Vintage motorcycle racer on Margate Beach

Tide’s out, and the flag drops for the Malle Beach Race

With a bucket and spade full of excitement, it was time to head down to glorious Margate to enjoy the annual tradition of watching inappropriate motorcycles racing along the golden beach. That's right; it's Malle Beach Race time of year, and with warm sunny weather predicted, it could be a scorcher…

Weather-wise, it wasn’t on Saturday, but at least it stayed dry. Thankfully, the company and the racing lived up to expectations. This year saw over 250 motorcycles racing on the beach in various classes. The Malle team calculated that over all the heats and classes across the weekend, they ran 2257 motorcycle races. All this while keeping an eye on the tide too.

Many of the usual suspects were in attendance, the Rag & Bone Man, Hoxton Motor and The Mexican Racer, to name just a few. Thankfully, the Beach Race has retained its focus on fun, racing inappropriate motorcycles along the golden sands. The official line from Jonny and Robert “No one is expected to win, and we all lose and party together all weekend, celebrating and elevating the humble motorcycle.”

For me, though, the highlight of the whole event was the attendance of the Detonators Car Club and their two belly tank racers. These guys and girls know how to put on a show and thoroughly enjoy themselves at the same time. Look out for a full feature soon.

Yet, by now, I should know better than to underestimate the draw of Andre’s events. Over 80 Porsches, spanning all types and eras, created a visual and aural treat for everyone who braved the weather.
