Speed, Glory and Thunderous Can-Am Monsters at Goodwood’s 81st Members Meeting

The Goodwood Members’ Meeting kicked off 2024 in thunderous fashion, showcasing some of the world’s best and noisiest historic motorsport. It delivered a cacophony of outrageous Can-Am cars, introduced modern motorcycle sidecars to the Goodwood Motor Circuit for the first time, and the Ken Miles Cup offered an entire grid of 30 first-generation Mustangs to delight the crowds.
The Members’ Meeting is open to members and fellows of the Goodwood Road Racing Club, aiming to recapture the camaraderie of the race weekends from Goodwood’s heyday. This event is similar to the Goodwood Revival but minus the enormous crowds. Although focusing on historic motor racing, the Members’ Meeting allows for some younger racing machinery to grace the track, more than you would typically see at the Revival. It wouldn’t be a Goodwood event without some celebration, and we were delighted by the 60th anniversary of the Ford Mustang, the 100th anniversary of the Bugatti Type 35, and 2024 marks ten years since the Members’ Meeting was revived as one of Goodwood’s flagship events.

Loud and Proud: The Can-Am Cars and Drivers

Over twenty thunderous Can-Am cars rolled onto the hallowed tarmac, lining up on the grid to form an impressive display. Among them were cars from McLaren, Shadow, and Porsche—three of the most successful marques raced in the Canadian-American Challenge Cup (Can-Am).

With the crowds cleared from the lunchtime grid walk, the drivers fired up the monstrous beasts for what the programme promised as the ‘loudest and most breathtaking demonstration ever held at the Goodwood Motor Circuit’. This statement was no exaggeration. I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing the odd Can-Am car running on track, but this was the first time I’ve seen and heard a whole grid-full. The noise from these almost unrestricted beasts is immense. The only thing I can compare these to is a top-fuel dragster—not only do you see and hear everything, but you feel it through your body as they thunder past. If you ever get the chance to experience a multitude of Can-Am cars, take it, but wear earplugs.

One advantage of the Members’ Meeting is that everyone can access the entire paddock area. While I wasn’t on a photo mission this weekend, I fully appreciated the ability to get up close to the cars and speak with some competitors.

Final thoughts

Once again, the Members’ Meeting proved to be a spectacular event, featuring exhilarating races and awe-inspiring demonstrations that honoured the legacy of the Goodwood circuit and the historic moments etched into its tarmac. The 81st Members’ Meeting was yet another impressive event delivered by Goodwood. Onwards to the Festival of Speed in July.
