Porsches and Puddles: Legends Drivers Club toast 30 Brews at Goodwood

Organising a bank holiday Monday event in the UK always carries a risk, weather-wise. While sunshine might be what we hoped for, that’s not what we got. The traditional bank holiday downpour, which at times felt biblical, didn’t put off the hardy souls who ventured out for a rather wet drive to Goodwood Motor Circuit to join André and the Legends Drivers Club.

It’s hard to believe that Legends Drivers Club has only been running for 20 months. Every event that André and the team have put on has been brilliant. Over that short time, they have built up a superb and well-deserved reputation. That’s why, on this very wet morning, so many people made an effort to drive down to Goodwood to celebrate 30 Legends Drivers Club events.

The weather may have been wet and grey, but the spirits were high. After a cautious drive down, I was pleased to see a varied collection of Porsche starting to fill up the gravel car park next to the old control tower—a perfect location with some tree cover and easy access to great coffee in the control tower cafe.

While the cars bring us together, the people make the event. At every Legends event, there is a genuine sense of friendship. Everyone is welcoming and happy to chat, and there are no egos jostling for attention. Whether you turn up in a brand-new, track-inspired spotless ride or an ‘in-progress’ project, everyone and every type of Porsche is welcome.

A well-framed 356A

Rather than another gathering with cars parked in rows, the team works hard to curate a visual treat of Stuttgart’s finest. The Legends team tries to accomplish this at every event, and Goodwood provides some great locations. A prime example was the strategically placed 356A coupe of @pj_gibbons within the wisteria-laden pergola. This made for a setting from every angle, and I’m sure it wouldn’t take much time to find many images of PJ’s car on Instagram.

I was fortunate to sit down for a coffee with PJ and Nick (@athingforclassics) and chat for a while. This conversation led to us embarking on an impromptu photoshoot around the paddocks with PJ’s 356 and Nick’s lovely white G Body 911. Check out their Instagram pages for more great images.

PJ and Nick are part of the team that organises the brilliant Classics at the Clubhouse—which happens later in the year on the 16th of June, 2024. It’s an exclusively air-cooled event set within the stunning grounds of Sandford Springs Hotel & Golf Club. There’ll be a series of special displays covering many air-cooled genres, including G Body 911s, pre-57 VWs, and ‘Art Cars’, among others. Hopefully, I’ll see you there.

Congratulations, and thank you

Running an event is hard work and a thankless task. Reaching the milestone of 30 events is highly commendable. Thank you to André and the team for putting on what is possibly, no definitely, the most welcoming and friendly regular series of Porsche meet-ups. You should all be proud of what you’ve achieved, and long may Legends Drivers Club continue.
