This year’s entry list hit capacity, probably due to everyone desperate to get out and play in the mud after all the various lockdowns. This event always delivers an eclectic mix of rally machines, and this year was no exception. Everything from classic Minis and Escorts to a Ferrari 308GTB. Plus, a brace of genuine rally cars, both classic and contemporary, including Colin McRae-styled Subaru Imprezas, to WRC-spec cars.
The event itself sees Brands Hatch transformed into a number of rally stages that encompass the race track, as well as sections of the pit lane, paddock, access roads and the circuit’s own rally experience areas. There’s also the bizarre sight of cars running the ‘wrong’ way around some sections of the track and the pit lane. There can be multiple stages running simultaneously, and cars can run multiple laps of a single stage. It’s sometimes difficult to know where to look to capture the best images, as there’s so much action happening simultaneously.
The Chelmsford Motor Club runs the Winter Stage Rally alongside other events. Their organisation and marshalling are always spot-on, balanced nicely with a very open-access policy to the pit eras. Spectators can get up close and personal with the cars, drivers and pit crews. Most are open to conversations when not elbows-deep preparing or fixing cars. A social atmosphere runs right through this event, and I recommend attending. One word of advice, though, dress appropriately in warm, waterproof clothes. That includes thermal underwear, too, as Brands Hatch is cold and damp at this time of year. Staying warm and dry will add to the joy of this event.
