Celebration of historic racing legends at 80th Goodwood Members Meeting

As Goodwood celebrates 75 years of motorsport, the Members Meeting delivered us a showcase of some the best historic motorsports on the planet, plus a delightful selection of classic and interesting vehicles to admire.

Although the weeks leading up to the Members’ Meeting had been wet, thankfully, the weather held out and delivered some welcome spring sunshine over West Sussex. As the event’s name suggests, only Goodwood Road Racing Club members and Fellows can attend, plus their invited guests. This makes the meeting much less crowded than public events, such as Goodwood Revival, offering photographers plenty of shooting opportunities. The dress code is relaxed for this event, with only one rule, ‘no denim’, but being Goodwood, there were plenty of people who really made the effort. While this is a great venue for people-watching, I was there for the cars and the racing. With 14 races over the weekend, there was a great selection to see. Many of the regular races were on the list, along with some new additions, such as the Jim Clark Trophy for Lotus Cortinas. This race saw a field of 30 Lotus Cortinas running in a series of close battles.

Alongside the vintage, historic and classics, we were treated to a great selection of GT1 racer cars from the early 2000s, a pair of Brabham-BMW BT52 Formula 1 cars, a Bently Speed 8 and Continental GT Le Man’s collection and demonstration runs from Gordon Murry Automotive. Saturday morning saw Gordon Murray unveiling his latest creation, a stunning Cosworth GMA2 V12  T33 spider—something I managed to miss.

Racing Porsche 911's

Porsche, Porsche everywhere

2023 sees both Porsche’s 75th and the 911’s 60th anniversary. A unique collection of historic racing cars hit the track in a fitting tribute. Various iterations of the 911, including the 1998 24 Hours of Le Mans-winning Porsche 911 GT1 98, the Martini livered 1973 Targa Florio-winning 911 RSR and the legendary, outragous 935/78 Moby Dick. The team from GT Classics bought along an impressive line-up, including 25% of the 1997 993 GT2 R production run. Being a Porsche fan, I spent far too long admiring all these fine machines.

I managed to tear myself away from the paddocks to watch the track action and not just the Porsche runs. The Members’ Meeting doesn’t have a cut-off date for racers like the Revivals’ pre-1966 only rule. This makes for a really eclectic mix of races from the early 20th-century Edwardian and aero-engined cars through to 1080’s touring cars right up to the mid-2000’s GT1 powerhouses. The action isn’t limited to four-wheel action either, as the Hailwood and Sheen Trophies open up the track to two-stroke grand prix motorcycles that raced up until 1983.

Members hats

As mentioned earlier, there were plenty of well-dressed people, and I found myself drawn to the hat-wearers. Maybe there’s a little side project in capturing the different headwear of Goodwood…

Final thoughts

Once again, the Members’ Meeting was a spectacular event showcasing incredible racing and breathtaking demonstrations, honouring the Goodwood circuit and the historical moments that have taken place on its tarmac. I’d go as far as to say it was the best of the four I’ve attended. I’m already looking forward to next year’s Members Meeting
