Custom painted crash helmet

Sunday morning. Nine bikes. One destination.

Some events begin when the gates open. Others begin the moment you pull on your helmet.

Pulling on a helmet and throwing a leg over a motorbike resets the mind.

Opening the throttle and rolling off the drive marks the start of a new adventure. A quick fuel stop before meeting other like-minded folks at Krazy Horse London. The morning sun lights up the line of bikes parked outside the shop. Warm greetings. Hellos to old friends and introductions to new faces. A mixed selection of bikes joins us as we enjoy the brief moment to catch up before heading out. Soon, nine bikes roll out onto the fresh morning roads, eastward, towards a distant airstrip.

Motorway riding is not the most fun, but when you’re part of a cavalcade of bikes, it takes on a very different feel.

Riding staggered along one lane, flowing like a serpent, smooth and steady. No one is in a hurry. No one is racing. Everyone is simply enjoying the ride and the company.

As the motorway gives way to A-roads, the views improve, the roads become more interesting, and the cruise settles into an even gentler rhythm. Almost meditative, floating along, guided by the road.

Helmets hang from handlebars as attention turns to coffee and the sound of engines leaving the line. Vintage hot rods, pro mods and street cars all share the same strip of tarmac. Different machinery, the same anticipation.

The racing was close and the atmosphere friendly. Whether in the pits or beside the trade stands, conversations flowed. Cars, bikes, drivers and riders, all brought together by a shared enthusiasm.

The biggest events often attract the biggest headlines, and rightly so. But places like Velocity Drags remind us that automotive culture has always grown from the ground up. Friends gathering around machines. Conversations started by curiosity.

Looking back, I’ve realised that sometimes, the best stories rarely begin on the starting line.

Keep an eye on Velocity Vintage Drags website and social media for upcoming events.
