Remembering one of life’s great connectors – Charles Evans / Douze Coupes

The House of Von Dirk exists to document the people, machines and stories that bring automotive culture to life. It would feel wrong to talk about connection, community and shared journeys without remembering our sorely missed friend, Charles Evans, better known to many as Douze Coupes.

Charles Evans, Mr Douze Coupes

We first met Charles while cycling across the Surrey Hills on an iRide Bianchi jaunt. A brief cake stop at the top of Box Hill quickly turned from bikes to cars, and that conversation became the beginning of a friendship that would grow over the years that followed.

Like many of you, we were drawn in by Charles’ curiosity, warmth and generosity. He had a rare ability to bring people together without ego or expectation. His love for cars was genuine, but it was always the people around them that mattered most.

Through Wacky Racers Coffee Club, Charles created something far bigger than a meet or a social gathering. He built a relaxed and welcoming community for like-minded people who enjoyed sharing stories, machines and time together. His own collection of cars was impressive, but it was his presence that kept people returning and introduced so many new friendships along the way.

For many across London and the south’s automotive community, Charles became one of the great connectors. Someone who made this world feel smaller, kinder and more human.

Charles tragically passed away in April 2022. His loss left an enormous space in the lives of those lucky enough to know him, and he remains deeply missed by so many.

Douze Coupes Cruise Advert

Each year since his passing, the Douze Coupes Cruise has been organised in his memory while raising money for Anthony Nolan – a cause close to the hearts of those involved, and one we know Charles would have supported wholeheartedly.

On 9 August 2026, we will once again gather together and cruise from Wimbledon in south west London down to Goodwood Motor Circuit, who have kindly allowed us to use their facilities to host the cruise and charity auction.

As always, the event celebrates the wonderfully varied mix of people and vehicles that Charles brought together through his enthusiasm, friendship and passion for automotive culture.

If you would like to join the cruise, support the auction, or donate to the cause, please contact @Woody.GT via Instagram.

All donations, large or small, will be greatly appreciated. Please visit the Just Giving page, managed by Louie Martin, to help us raise funds for Anthony Nolan.

Because the best stories are created together.

Move differently. Notice more.
